Estimation of White Matter Fiber Orientations with the Funk-Radon and Cosine Transform

چکیده
INTRODUCTION MR tractography methods depend on the accurate estimation of orientation distribution functions (ODFs) from diffusion MRI data. A new ODF estimation method called the Funk-Radon and Cosine Transform (FRACT) was recently introduced for this purpose [1]. The FRACT is a linear method that generalizes the previous Funk-Radon Transform (FRT) [2]. While the FRACT is as easy to characterize as the FRT, it offers substantially improved angular resolution because it is able to approximate the constant solid angle ODF. This work evaluates the FRACT with respect to other ODF estimation techniques, including the FRT, constant solid angle q-ball imaging (CSA-QBI) [3], and non-negativity constrained super-resolution spherical deconvolution (CSD) [4].

Linear transforms for Fourier data on the sphere: Application to high angular resolution diffusion MRI of the brain
This paper presents a novel family of linear transforms that can be applied to data collected from the surface of a 2-sphere in three-dimensional Fourier space. This family of transforms generalizes the previously-proposed Funk-Radon Transform (FRT), which was originally developed for estimating the orientations of white matter fibers in the central nervous system from diffusion magnetic resona...
متن کاملA new methodology for the estimation of fiber populations in the white matter of the brain with the Funk-Radon transform
The Funk-Radon Transform (FRT) is a powerful tool for the estimation of fiber populations with High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI). It is used in Q-Ball imaging (QBI), and other HARDI techniques such as the recent Orientation Probability Density Transform (OPDT), to estimate fiber populations with very few restrictions on the diffusion model. The FRT consists in the integration of...

The choice of local HARDI reconstruction technique is crucial for discerning multiple fiber orientations, which is itself of substantial importance for tractography, and reliable and accurate assessment of white matter fiber geometry. Due to the complexity of the diffusion process and its milieu, distinct diffusion compartments can have different frequency signatures, making the HARDI signal sp...
متن کاملEstimation of fiber Orientation Probability Density Functions in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging
An estimator of the Orientation Probability Density Function (OPDF) of fiber tracts in the white matter of the brain from High Angular Resolution Diffusion data is presented. Unlike Q-Balls, which use the Funk-Radon transform to estimate the radial projection of the 3D Probability Density Function, the Jacobian of the spherical coordinates is included in the Funk-Radon approximation to the radi...
متن کاملModel-Free, Regularized, Fast, and Robust Analytical Orientation Distribution Function Estimation
High Angular Resolution Imaging (HARDI) can better explore the complex micro-structure of white matter compared to Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) in HARDI is used to describe the probability of the fiber direction. There are two type definitions of the ODF, which were respectively proposed in Q-Ball Imaging (QBI) and Diffusion Spectrum Imaging (DSI). Som...
